Dan Whalen talks to Scott Heslop ahead of Dunston FC’s BetVictor North/West League
game against Runcorn Linnets on Saturday 31st August.

.

If he was Brazilian they’d call him Hesiñho, but he’s not Brazilian, he’s a local lad from Gateshead and is a firm favourite amongst the Dunston FC faithful.

Scott Heslop gives he’s thoughts ahead of this weekends game and the season ahead. What are your thoughts

on the start we ’ ve made to the season so far ?

SH - Personally I feel like we haven 't quite got going yet. We have been starting games slowly and our performances as a whole need to improve. We have stopped doing what we do best, turning ball over and

playing off seconds which worked wonders for us last year.

Have you noticed a step up in the quality of this league compared to last season ?

SH - From the three teams we have played, I have noticed a slight increase in quality, but I still feel like we

have more than enough quality to challenge for the promotion.

This coming Saturday we face Runcorn Linnets at home. They’ve had an similar start to us with a win, a loss

and a draw. Do you know much about the opposition or are you focusing on your own game going into this

one ?

SH - We know nothing about anyone in this League, which is both a blessing and a curse at the same time, but ultimately we have to concentrate on our own game. If we play like we know we can, we can beat anyone.

We need to take in the performances from pre-season into these games that matter the most.

Last season you built up a solid partnership with Fitzy (Mark Fitzpatrick) and you worked hard on adapting your game. What targets have you set yourself this season given what was achieved last season ?

SH - Last season we all had an unreal season. It was the first full season we have played upfront as a two and I thought it worked well! I was buzzing he managed to get the golden boot, because he worked his socks off. Personally I want to try and beat last year ’s goal tally and get 20+ goals, but I ’ m not that fussed as long as the

team ’s flying.

There have been massive changes around the ground and there's a load of excitement around the town going into this season. How important is it for people in Dunston to get behind and support the team this season ?

SH - The lads love it when we have a massive crowd behind us, it gets us going. There is nowt better when we score at the “ Gallowgate end” with all the fans behind the goal going mad! It ’s also great to see loads of young lads and lasses coming along as well . It’s great for the Town and the Club !

Your Dad is a Dunston Fed Legend, who’s the better player you or him ?

SH - My Dad was assistant manager here for a few years but I don't think he ever played for us, so I' ll have to

say myself!
